What is an ostomy?

  • Stoma = Greek meaning mouth or orifice
  • Ostomy = a man-made stoma, usually referred to orifice to the surface of body, and characterised by the lack of control of discharge
Ostomy
Is the result of an operation with the aim of removing the cause of the disease or relieving its symptoms with everted intestine

HISTORY OF THE OSTOMY


Nature: Incarcerated hernia> outwards rupture > stoma
War: Stabs, cuts to the abdomen > Ostomy
1710: Dr. Littre (France) described a method of creating a stoma
1776: Dr. Pillore (France) performed the first Ostomy
1878: Dr. Maydl (Germany) performed the first proctosigmoidectomy




  • 1950:  Ostomy belt with a glass bowl, rubber bag, rubber cap
  • 1957:  First disposable colostomy bag of plastic is made - nurse Elise Sørensen contrived the idea.

After colostomy surgery , your stool will pass through your stoma , the opening on your abdomen and empty into pouch .
You will no longer have voluntary control over bowel movements.
